You’ll probably recall the 2017 – 2018 listeriosis outbreak in South Africa which resulted in more than 1000 cases of food poisoning due to consuming contaminated ready-to-eat/processed meat products.

On any given day, you’ll find foodborne illness outbreaks worldwide: Five strains of bacteria found in infant formula plant; Oat company recalls drink because of Bacillus cereus; French officials confirm some e-Coli cases; Norovirus outbreak – oysters recalled; Easter Chocolate Recall after Salmonella outbreak. These are not even the 5 top Food recalls, and the list goes on.

Besides the human cost and recall costs, adverse publicity can ruin the company involved. So, focusing on food safety is not a cost, but an investment. Helping our clients keep their promises (to keep people safe) is our biggest investment.

That’s why at Plastic Bubbles we help our clients adopt a food safety culture and provide the best plastic packaging solutions to keep food safe.

What to consider when it comes to packaging for food safety

Our facility has stringent safety processes in place.  Our food safety strategy goes beyond any compliance expected of us.  These are some of our DO’s and DON’Ts:

DO’s

We do….

DON’Ts

We don’t ….

● Use the best and safest raw materials for all packaging products

●  Use raw materials containing poisonous substances e.g., BPA, heavy metals

● Have strict personal hygiene factors always being adhered to ● Use materials containing decomposed substances e.g., poor quality recyclate

●  Clean all contact surfaces including production equipment, floors, walls, and ceilings every day ● Produce products under contaminated conditions i.e., working surfaces and environment not maintained

● Measure the air quality around our facility routinely

● Process sampling before, during, and after production

As a food supplier from wholesaler to retailer, WE don’t want to harm anyone, have adverse publicity, and have expensive recalls.  Do YOU?

How can your company demonstrate a food safety culture?

  • In short, everyone in the company must be 100% committed to food safety. This includes leaders, employees, and clients.
  • Take pride in producing high-quality and food-safe products, every time.
  • Train everyone in your company on how to ensure food safety.
  • It is encouraged to adopt a food safety culture within the organisation; live, breathe and sleep “food safety”.

Ensuring that the food you supply to your clients is safe makes good business sense. It’s an investment, not a cost. You’ve fought hard to build your reputation in the market. And, you know that one foodborne illness outbreak can seriously damage your business’s reputation and cost you financially at best, and at worst it can cost you your entire business.

What is our food safety culture?

We have a simple philosophy at Plastic Bubbles: culture is “the way we do things around here”. It is how everyone within the company thinks and acts in their daily job to ensure safe, quality products. Our values are congruent so that even when no one is watching, the same positive behaviours happen.

All our employees go through stringent training to ensure that what we produce is of the highest quality and guaranteed food safety.

We have a culture to set our clients up for success, so that their customers are safe and that their brand reputation is always 100% intact when it comes to food safety.

You may have noticed that we say ‘clients’ and not ‘customers. This is a nuanced distinction, but a vital one. A ‘customer’ is someone who buys a product or service. A ‘client’ is under our protection. And that’s what we do … we protect our clients in every way we can by producing superior products fit for their intended use.
