Fifty years ago, in 1975, in a modest little warehouse in Brakpan, one small injection moulding machine hummed into life — and with it, a big dream was born. That dream was Plastic Bubbles.
Back then, we were making plastic toys and bottles of actual bubbles (yes, that’s how we got our name!), and while the products were small, the ambition was enormous.
By 1977, just two years in, our creativity spilled over into South African homes with the launch of our own homeware range, Stratoware. Those early days were full of trial, error, and the occasional late-night victory dance when the first homeware products came out just right.
The Early Moves – Building the Dream
In 1980, we packed up and moved to a small factory in Fulcrum, Springs — our first big leap forward. Then, in 1982, we set up our own independent toolroom, giving us the ability to take a customer’s idea from concept to a full turnkey solution.
By 1984, we’d entered the FMCG packaging market, adding high-speed injection moulding machines that could produce thousands of caps in the blink of an eye. That’s when we truly learned that speed and precision could be a beautiful combination.
The Heartbeat – Our People
Through every move, machine upgrade, and innovation, one constant has powered Plastic Bubbles: our people.
Our toolmakers, setters, and quality personnel, with their eye for perfection, can spot a fraction-of-a-millimetre flaw from across the room. Our line operators, mixers, and maintenance team know the comforting rhythm of well-running moulds and machines like a favourite song. And our leadership, foremen, and supervisors have always dared to think big, and then bigger.
The Legacy of Stratos
The 1990s and 2000s brought clean rooms, fireproof mould stores, and smarter systems. But in 2008, we faced our toughest moment — the loss of our beloved founder, Stratos Moutafis. Stratos was more than a businessman; he was the kind of leader who knew everyone’s name, celebrated birthdays on the factory floor, and never left without one last walk around the plant.
His daughter, Virginia Missaikos, took the reins as Managing Director, carrying forward his values of innovation, integrity, and generosity.
Innovation on Fast-Forward
In 2010, we brought 3D printing into our toolroom — a first in our sector. Then came robotics, in-mould labelling, expanded clean room capacity, and full-plant backup power (because not even load-shedding can stop a 50-year dream).
By 2018, we were proudly FSSC 22000 certified and had achieved 51% Black ownership, moving from Level 4 to Level 3 B-BBEE status by 2025. In 2020, Akis Moutafis became CEO, injecting new energy (and a love for faster changeovers!) into the business.
Sustainability & Smart Growth
In 2021, we installed 738 solar panels — generating over 440MWh a year and cutting our grid usage by 25%. The day they went live, our team gathered outside, watching the first kilowatts roll in, knowing we were making a real difference.
By 2022, we’d expanded into pharmaceutical packaging, adding CRCs, hinged tablet vials, flip-top caps, scoops, and more.
2023 and 2024 brought smarter energy, water backup systems, and digital integration with Webfleet, BMS Vision, and ZOHO — so now we can monitor production 24/7 from anywhere.
2025 – Our Golden Year
This year, as we turn 50, we’ve introduced our first wadding machines, expanding our closures range and reminding ourselves that growth never stops.
From one machine in a Brakpan warehouse to a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant, Plastic Bubbles has always been more than a plastics company — we are a family.
Our story is one of grit, laughter, late nights, first tries, and countless “we did it!” moments. It’s the story of people who believed in a vision and worked side-by-side to make it real.
Here’s to the next 50 years of plastic innovation, bold ideas and shared successes.
AMANDLA! VIVA Plastic Bubbles, VIVA!
